Oracular Writing

Oracular Writing is a creative practice rooted in principles of observation, receptivity, inquiry, and encounter. I developed this workshop at the University of Arizona Poetry Center in 2008, and taught several evolving variations until 2016. I now offer manuscript and project consultations, process restoration, and small group workshops online and in person. 

 I'm writing all the time.

With contextual awareness we may come to understand the artistic practice as a relationship with the life forces in physical and non-ordinary reality.  More than an act of singular agency, more than product, our work is elemental, and evidentiary of relational aesthetics.  The artist/writer leaves evidence of her encounters. ​

Oracular thought asks the practitioner to enlarge the field of “writer,” in order to better understand the role of artist as participant, witness, collaborator and partner.

Different kinds of seeing yield different kinds of knowing. 

Through the practice of inquiry we learn radical presence, which yields intuitive access to creation and completion. Creativity: with respectful attunement we orient to the encounter.

The writing process is considered  in terms of relationship dynamics, and the text is considered evidence of these relations.

Project Engagement
Participants will share a writing sample and receive a tailored inquiry designed to unearth latent directives in the work.

Inquiry +discussion. $65-100 an hour.

This private session will include:

- Inquiry related to the writing sample
- Craft analysis in terms of contextual awareness and energetics. 
-Introduction to image amplification and/or realm tech
- A "commission" grounded in oracular principles, related to the project. 
- A “reading” of obstructions or inherent directives. 
- A review of the writing process in terms of relationship dynamics. 
- Process analysis. Initiate an immersive, contemplative relationship with the images in our work and in our lives. 


Process Restoration
Create, invigorate or establish a writing practice in conscious partnership.  Instruction includes examination of obstructions and pathways.

In-depth exploration of manuscript or artistic project, and review of personal process.

Manuscript Engagement: Participants will receive an articulated description of the structure, sequencing, and trajectory of the shared work, including line editing, and contextual and paratextual commentary.  I will also offer a tailored inquiry, which is designed to grow  or complete a work, as the case may be. We will also consider the manuscript in terms of process and practice.

Participants receive a written response, one online or in-person meeting, and one follow-up conversation. $500 ​

Coursework in community. Learn the principles necessary to create a robust and sustainable creative practice. Expand understanding of editing, revision and publishing through
relational aesthetics. Inquiry-only workshop disarms power dynamics.

Living Images
Writers are in the business of raising images: from memory, from the dead, from the subconscious, from dreams, from the collective (un)conscious, from the imagination, from art, from physical and metaphysical experiences. Images contain information that can guide us in how to proceed in our writing projects.  They contain histories, archetypal symbology, biological context, they reveal perceptual, metaphorical, and emotional orientations.  An immersive, contemplative relationship with the images that make up our writing/days will, in many cases reveal a pathway to creation and completion...

Foraging
Collection, bounty, nourishment. Contextual awareness gives rise to conscious partnership. We will examine creativity as a continuum. By considering metabolic process and sustainability, we learn the principles to create a meaningful writing relationship.
