Praise for THE GOOD DARK

participants speak about the experience. . .

Annie reads the ferment, the ghost, and future in ways I cannot exactly put my finger on. Her deep sight has salvaged at least one manuscript of mine, inspired my own ways of reading, and my pedagogy. I once received a three paged single-spaced letter in response to a draft I had sent her. Annie's understanding of the writing devastated me and opened its life onward. This most generous gift reminded me that care for others writing is rare, and even more rare is a care for and communion with the spirit of the book itself. A total commitment to midwife it towards its own strange and mottled forms. Her radical ways of seeing and being with language are embodied in all of her offerings in whose presence I hope many will gather...

Annie Guthrie's Oracular Writing class is inspiring, generative, and, dare I say, magical.   Her generative writing assignments are  created with the idea of pulling forth from her students not exact words, poems, stories but the practices, rituals, observances necessary to nurture one's writing. Her feedback changed my writing process for the better and had me thinking about sustainability and resilience in my practice in new ways. Her close reading and feedback was careful and considered opening a breadth of possibilities that left me with a stronger sense of where to take my project.

Annie once gave me a piece of advice that I always return to. I remember I'd mentioned something about feeling distracted from my work--or not able to get in the writing time I craved. Annie looked at me and said--in her refreshingly direct and honest way, which cuts right through: "But Johanna, we're poets. We're always working." Annie bears this statement out not just through her own writing but also through her approach to teaching and editing, continuously challenging us to read and write the world anew. When I was at a difficult place with my last collection of poetry, The Description of the World, Annie helped me see how I could go forward with the individual poems, and by helping me to return to this special way of living and seeing. I am forever grateful for her wisdom.

Annie Guthrie’s capacious imagination and clear vision helps a writer see into, through, above, and below an initial draft of a text. She can see what the text avoids, what the text includes, and helps writers navigate the endlessly flexible positioning that writing requires. Her insights into my own fiction projects have created new pathways, peeled open new possibilities for the writer and for the characters. Her companionship in the act of writing is an invaluable resource.

I found my work going into surprising directions, even blurring the lines of genre and modality. Curiosity and receptivity keep us open to the possibilities of creative work, and Annie is a generous guide into this process of paying deep attention. She encourages writers and artists to dwell in the unknowable, in mystery, and my work has been made better for this. The essay that came out of this class was published here.
